If McCain were winning, you would be all for him. You know he’s not doing well, so you’re saying “Both sides suck!” so you don’t have ownership of a lemon.

Obama is going to be good for our nation. He has honest-to-go plans for things. I don’t see plans out of McCain. Go to his website. They blather about how bad Obama is much more then what McCain wants to do.

Barack has beatitudes. McCain has platitudes.

When Barack is called out, he tries to respond. McCain jumps to his safe zones, recalling his military service and relying on short, safe answers. He’s a quote machine. This nation needs a thoughtful leader. Not a quote machine. GW is a quote machine. Bill Clinton was a quote machine. Barack Obama will not be.

Perhaps like you, I’m not registered to a party. I’m not saying I’m big-I Independent. I vote for who makes sense. And Barack’s the man this time. He wants tax cuts for people who actually spend money to improve the economy. McCain wants tax cuts for all, but the people who actually spend money don’t get a very good one. Meanwhile, the people at the top just horde more wealth, increasing economic disparity and stopping economic growth.

I’m not gonna lie to you. I’m an ol’ lefty. I believe that government is there to do the things we can’t do by ourselves. I don’t think any man is an island. Like Mrs. Obama suggested in her speech tonight, she did pull herself up from her bootstraps. But she’s not foolish enough to think she did it alone. She did it with family. She did it with government loans. She had the system to help her. And it was enough help move her from one economic level where she wasn’t very productive to one where she was.

I can understand your cynicism. Government is not the best vehicle, a lot of the time. Sometimes it’s used as a cure all where it shouldn’t be. But those times, while not in the public’s best interest, are less damaging then taking government away when it really can be helpful.

I don’t think a post on an internet forum will change your mind, but I just ask you sit down and think for a bit. I know its easy to think that government takes and never gives back, and its easy to develop the thought that government shouldn’t take at all. But really, please, consider.

If Michelle Obama had to go to private lenders, do you think the poor girl from the south side would have gotten the loans she needed to get into schools like she attended? I know for me, without a combination of government-funded ADA programs and student loans, I’d never have gone to college, and gotten my teaching degree. I’d have never gone back, and gotten my Library Science degree. Just today I got my first LIS job, in a college archive working sorting the papers of a very famous legal personality. Coming where I came from in a depressed town in upstate NY, I’d have likely been working for a retail store if I had to stay here without the education benefits.

Government has a role, bigger then the military, tax reform and social security checks. It’s the uniting factor. It can make us all better. I hope, maybe with some time, you might see government as this wonderfully transformative thing that I’ve had it been.
